Congratulations Dr. Jackie Litzgus was recently granted $65K from Ontario Power Generation to conduct a 2-yr study (starting April 2007) on critical habitat assessment and seasonal activity of the federally endangered spotted turtle at the OPG-Tiverton site. Congratulations!
Thesis Defence Congratulations to the following graduate student who successfully defended his thesis: Peter Fairman (M.Sc. - December 4, 2006) - Functional interactions between Raf-1 and PKC regulates cytokine expression in THP-1 monocyte-like cells (supervised by Dr. R. Lafrenie) Jamie Gorrell (M.Sc. December 12, 2006) - Individual variation in parasitism, testosterone and indices of health in North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) (supervised by Dr. A. Schulte-Hostedde) Jing Hong Hu (M.Sc. - December 15, 2006) - Cytometric and histological measurements of gross and subtle stimuli upon brain and melanoma tissue (supervised by Dr. M. Persinger) Seminars On November 10, Dr. Jim Schaefer (Trent University, Peterborough, ON) presented a seminar entitled "Conservation, population ecology, and scale – lessons from northern mammals." Dr. Michael Arts (Environment Canada, National Water Research Institute, Burlington, ON) visited the Department on November 17 and gave a seminar entitled "Fatty acids in freshwater food webs: their effects on ecosystem health and food web dynamics." On December 1, Mr. Brad Steinberg (Park Biologist, Algonquin Provincial Park with the MNR - Ontario Parks) presented a seminar entitled "The Wolves of Algonquin Park."
