Congratulations!
Congratulations to Ms. Carol G. Coffey who has been awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship for the coming year. Ms. Coffey's thesis Impact of Careful Logging on Woodland Caribou Forage in Northeastern Ontario Lowland Black Spruce Sites is being supervised by Drs. Frank F. Mallory and Jim Rettie.
Congratulations to Dr. Frank F. Mallory on his appointment to the Ontario Elk Restoration Advisory Committee. This committee will review applications for elk re-introduction from various MNR Districts across Ontario.
Presentations and Activities Outside the Department
Prof. Keith Winterhalder was guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony for the Timmins Regional Science Fair on the 8th April 1999.
The 38th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Zoologists, held May 6-8 at the University of Ottawa, was attended by Dr. F. Mallory and Mr. D. Wiwchar (who made the presentation "Morphology of wolves, Canis lupus, from current and historical ranges of woodland caribou, Rangifer tarandus, in Ontario"), and Dr. P. Couture, Mr. S. Eastwood, and Mr. J. Rajotte (who presented "Are trace metals impacting our wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens) populations?" - S.E. & P.C. and "Effects of metals on swim performance and metabolism in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from four lakes near Sudbury, Ontario" - J.R. & P.C.). After the technical sessions, part of the AGM was devoted to the plans for the 40th Annual Meeting to be held at Laurentian University in 2001.
