Congratulations - Awards and Grants

Bravo to Ms. Angèle Brabant and Mr. Daniel Trottier, students from our Biomedical Option, who have been awarded Fellowships from the Fondation Baxter & Alma Ricard! These prestigious awards, given to only a handful of top students n Canada, can be renewed for three years for a total value of $78,000. Mr. Trottier is currently studying medicine at the University of Ottawa; Ms. Brabant plans to attend the same institution.

Hearty congratulations to Mr. Bruce McKay who has won a Postgraduate Scholarship from the Natual Sciences and Engineering Research council of Canada. The award is worth $17,3000 per annum and will allow Mr. McKay to pursue his studies in Behavioural Neuroscience at Laurentian University.

Dr. F.F. Mallory and Dr. P. Julig (Anthropology) have been awarded a SSHRC SIG grant ($15,000) for research on The Upper Great Lake Region: Exploring the Benefits of UNESCO Desigantion as a World Heritage Site and Co-Management Opportunities.


Congratulations - Appointments

Drs. P. Couture and F.F. Mallory have been appointed Associate Graduate Faculty positions in the Department of Zoology, University of Guelph. This status permits them to co-supervise Ph.D. students under the Univeristy of Gueph/Laurentian University Ph.D. agreement.


Presentations

Dr. P. Couture attended the Sudbury Restoration Workshop 2000, held on February 22, 2000. He presented the invited paper "Physiological consequences of metal exposure for wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens) living in metal-contaminated environments," co-authoured with Messrs. S. Eastwood and J. Rajotte, and Ms. D. Audet. Ms. Audet also presented the poster "Effects of metals on the annual variation of condition of yellow perch (Perca flavescens) through the study of growth rate and metabolic capacity." Mr. Rajotte presented the poster "Physiological assessment of feral yellow perch (Perca flavescens) inhabiting lakes near Sudbury, Ontario."

Alumni

Dr. Greg Pyle successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis The toxicity and bioavailability of nickel and molybdenum to standard toxicity-test fish species, and fish species found in northern Canadian lakes at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, in January 2000.

Dr. Dianne Cameron successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis Temporal progression of lung metastasis: cell survial, dormany and loacation dependence at the University of Western Ontario in January 2000.

Mr. C. Contant (M.Sc. Biology 1997) has been appointed to the position of Director of Research and Development for Tembec Inc., an integrated Canadian forest products company in Témiscaming, Québec.

Mr. D. Salmoni (a.k.a. Mr. Rude) (B.Sc. Hons. Biology 1997) is currently training tigers and leopards for nature films with the largest film producer in Africa. His current e-mail address is "dsalmoni@hotmail.com" and he resides in Paulshof, a small community near Pretoria, South Africa.

Ms. H. Melcher (B.Sc. Hons. Biology 1995) has just completed her M.Sc. in marine ecology at the University of Blythe, England and is currently employed by the Aquaculture Association, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
