Announcements
The Department is pleased to announce that The Wynn Watson Bursary, funded in large part by faculty donations, becomes available in September 1998; students may pick up appication forms shortly after registration in the fall.
The bursary is named in honour of our distinguished former chairman, Dr. Wynn Watson, who was at the helm during our early formative years and was very influential in setting the direction of our subsequent development.

Activities
Drs. Glenn Parker and Peter Beckett acted as judges at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Timmins, held May 12-13. Dr. Beckett also represented the Canadian Botanical Association/Association Botanique du Canada in the judging of Special Awards. On May 14, Prof. Keith Winterhalder, Past-President of the CBA/ABC, presented the Association's Award for the 'Best Plant Science Project' to Meredith Soon of British Columbia.
On June 13 and 14, Prof. Keith Winterhalder jointly led a Field Botanists of Ontario field excursion to Manitoulin Island with Dr. John Morton, author of The Flora of Manitoulin Island and Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo. The emphasis of the excursion was on alvar and sand dune flora. Other Laurentian participants were Dr. Peter Beckett, graduate student Mr. Ed Morris (who is editor of the FBO Newsletter), and Herbarium volunteer Ms. Marlies Schoenefeld.
Alumni News
Catherine Daniel (M.Sc. 1997) has been hired by the British Columbia government as a Mine Inspector, based in northern BC. Her duties will include the evaluation of the success of revegetation procedures in the decommissioning of mines and mine wastes.
